Taj Mahal – Best Travel & Photography Guide

Taj Mahal, one of the new 7 wonders of the World was high on my bucket list for years. Being an Indian, I always felt so embarrassed that I hadn’t seen this wonder ever (I am not accounting the visit when I was 6 months old, which I obviously don’t remember!). So ever since I moved from USA to Singapore, this visit was topmost in my priority list.

In 2019, I was finally able to visit this wonder for 2 full days & I must admit, it was absolutely worth the wait. With my Taj Mahal travel & photography guide, you will have everything you need to know to make your Taj Mahal visit truly memorable.

Before I share the Taj Mahal travel and photography tips, here’s a little history about this iconic location. Taj Mahal is situated on the banks of river Yamuna in the North Indian city of Agra. Taj Mahal was commissioned by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor for housing the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Hence, it’s also considered as the ultimate “symbol of love”.

It took over 11 years for this magnificent ivory-marble wonder to get completed in 1643. This also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan, the emperor. In 1983, Taj Mahal was designated as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taj Mahal is one of the best examples of Mughal architecture. Hence, it’s no surprise that millions of people (7-8 million) visit this beauty every year.

But don’t let that crazy number of tourists scare you because with the help of my Taj Mahal travel and photography guide, you will be able to avoid the mass tourists and shoot some amazing pictures. So, let’s take a look at some important information you should know before your Agra visit.

BEST WAY TO VISIT TAJ MAHAL

Most travelers plan to visit Taj Mahal during the famous India’s Golden Triangle trip. While it may seem appropriate, I would suggest not to do a day trip to Taj Mahal or same day tour from cities like New Delhi, Noida. Technically it’s feasible and you will get a good glimpse of this marvelous destination.

However, to have a holistic travel experience of visiting Taj Mahal, at least spend 2 days and 1 night in the city of Agra. Witnessing the Taj Mahal is once in a lifetime’s experience. So while planning my trip to Agra, I did not want bad weather, rush hour, harsh afternoon lighting and humidity or crowded atmosphere to dampen my Taj Mahal travel experience.

So I found it ideal to stay two nights in Agra. This gave me ample time & opportunity to make my visit to Taj Mahal truly memorable as well as explore other amazing places in Agra .

BEST TIME TO VISIT TAJ MAHAL

Agra lies in an arid and subtropical climate with extremely hot and dry weather during summer. Thus, the months of April – June, the temperature can be as hot as 50°C (122°F). So it’s best to avoid the scorching summer months as one may experience possible heat stroke and dehydration.

From July – September, it’s the monsoon season and may disrupt your travel plans due to heavy rainfall. It also gets extremely hot and humid. If photographing this iconic wonder is one of your primary objective, then it’s best to avoid these months too.

The best time of the year to visit Taj Mahal

During winter (October – December) or Spring (February-March), it is the best time to visit this World Wonder. While winter may be ideal due to cooler & cleaner weather, it’s also peak tourist times due to December holiday season. The hotel rates are high and usually one has to book significantly in advance.

To have the best experience, the shoulder seasons are the ideal time to visit Taj Mahal. We opted to visit in March to celebrate our wedding anniversary and found it perfect. The weather was ideal ranging from 15°C – 30°C (60°F-85°F) with little crowd compared to winter months.

Also, during Spring months, the foggy sunrises give this place a surreal view that’s hard to express in words. Of the two sunrises I witnessed, the morning that was covered in fog and mist ended up being my favorite moment at the Taj.

The best time of the day to visit the Taj Mahal

Definitely during the sunrise. The early mornings are cooler, the light is perfect for photography and the crowds are smaller. Avoid weekends and national holidays for your visit. Weekdays are best with Mondays being the quietest.

TAJ MAHAL ENTRANCE TICKETS

There are three gates; East, West and the South. Tickets are available for purchase at the East and West gates, one hour before sunrise upto 45 minutes before sunset. Currently you can only use the South gate for exit.

Locals and Indian visitors mainly use the West gate and hence crowded. East gate is used by foreigners as its close to famous hotels and guesthouses and therefore less crowded.

The entrance fee for Taj Mahal are INR 1050 (~USD 13) for foreigners and INR 535 (~USD 7) for citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC countries. Indian citizens need pay only INR 50 (<USD 1) while children below 15 years enter for free. If you wish to visit the mausoleum, you have to pay an additional INR 200 (~USD 3) .

Although you can purchase ticket at the gate, I would highly recommend to obtain online tickets to save you time early morning. With online purchase, you can avail discount of INR 50 for foreigners and INR 5 for Indian citizens. You can use your mobile for scanning e-tickets during entrance.

TAJ MAHAL VISITING HOURS

The complex opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset during normal operating days. Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for tourists as prayers are held in mosque next to the mausoleum.

Arrive at the East gate preferably 45 mins – 1 hr before the sunrise. You will have to stand in line outside the gate in separate lines for men and women. Make sure not to carry the forbidden things (list mentioned below) as your bag will be scanned thoroughly.

During my visit, the security checks for men were much quicker than the women’s line. So if you are traveling with a male partner, let him carry the backpack for faster screening process.

VISITING TAJ MAHAL DURING FULL MOON NIGHTS

If you truly seek an unforgettable romantic moment, plan your Taj Mahal visit during the full moon nights. Night viewing of Taj Mahal is available on five days in a month i.e. on full moon night and two nights before and two nights after the full moon. Night Viewing of the Taj Mahal is closed on every Friday & in the month of Ramadan.

Every night only 400 visitors are allowed to enter Taj Mahal premises for night viewing. The tickets must be purchased one day before the night view date from the counter at ASI office, 22 Mall Road, Agra from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The tickets are priced at INR 500 (~USD 7) for Indians and INR 750 (~USD 10) for foreigners. If you are a lover of night photography, definitely plan your visit around the dates of full moon.

For each night viewing of Taj Mahal, one gets only 30 minutes. So be sure to plan your shoot during your morning visit and make it quick while you’re in there!

  • Portable chargers
  • Paints and color pencils

TAJ MAHAL PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

If you are planning to visit Taj Mahal, I am sure there are few iconic shots that are already in back of your mind due to social media shares. The signature shot of Taj Mahal reflections in turquoise fountain or clicking the majestic white marble from the backdrop of the building.

Like all, I also wanted to get those classic shots as they are too beautiful to be missed. While you should definitely aim to shoot them, I would highly encourage to look for as many new perspectives as possible.

Taj Mahal is extremely beautiful and I still remember how I stared at this wonder with so much admiration and pride as I got closer to it! The main photography tip is to get creative with your shots and look for new vantage points/angles. I have listed down some of my best spots to photograph Taj Mahal.

1. SIGNATURE TAJ MAHAL SHOT FROM THE MOSQUE

Before my visit to Taj Mahal, I had seen this classic shot all over Instagram that I definitely wanted to recreate. To get this perspective, arrive early during sunrise and head straight to the Kau Ban Mosque on the right of Taj Mahal. Do not stop to take photos right at the entrance like everyone. It’s hard not to photograph the moment you see the majestic marble beauty, but trust me you will get more chances later to shoot there.

You can also get a similar perspective if you choose to shoot from Jawab, also known as the Guest House, on the left side of the Taj Mahal. Personally I have taken shots from both but prefer to shoot from Kau Ban Mosque during sunrise as you can capture the sun rising from the corners of Taj Mahal. Once you have captured the sunrises, head to the Guest House to shoot the white facade illuminated by the bright sun.

If you want couple or group shots, it’s best to ask someone (preferably other couples who are also shooting) to take photos since tripods are not allowed. Alternatively you can choose to hire a photographer but I wouldn’t advise the guides or photographers who will be found roaming inside the complex.

These “guides” seem a bit pushy and allure you with good spots and angles. But if you are willing to try them, bargain a price before handing over your camera. I feel it’s a hit or miss, so be prepared that you may or may not be happy with the outcome.

Please be respectful as prayers are still held in this mosque every Friday. Remember to remove your footwear before getting inside the mosque.

Best Photo Tip: Use a wide angle lens to capture the entire frame of the mosque facade with the backdrop of the Taj Mahal. Wear a bright colored outfit so as to provide the perfect contrast to this shot. Time your shoot as you will be able to capture the sun rays peeking from the corner.

2. CLASSIC SHOT WITH THE FOUNTAIN

This is perhaps the most photographed angle of the Taj Mahal. I consider this as the classic shot as every magazine, postcard, article will feature this breathtakingly beautiful angle of the Taj.

Although you will find it most empty when you enter first, you can get it relatively free later on as nobody blocks this view. You will find people making queues to get shots here and hence you need not aim for this place right at the beginning of your visit. If you visit Taj Mahal more than one day, you can aim to shoot here first on your second day visit.

Tripods are not allowed in the complex. So, get creative or improvise to get that steady shot of the reflections of the Taj on the fountain pool.

3. BEAUTIFUL COMPLEX OF TAJ MAHAL

While we all want to shoot the majestic white marble, the entire grounds of the Taj Mahal is extremely beautiful. We are not allowed to photograph inside the main mausoleum but the intricate details and motifs of the façade outside are too beautiful to be missed. Walk around the complex and you will find so many beautiful angles to capture.

On either side of the Kau Ban Mosque, you will find small corridors with arches that provide a new perspective. The doorways and arches of these corridors provide the perfect frame for capturing the Taj Mahal. Also the brick red mosque has incredible details and patterns that you should not miss from capturing.

4. SUNSET AT MEHTAB BAGH

One of my favorite spots to watch sunset overlooking Taj Mahal is Mehtab Bagh or Moonlight garden. Just north of Taj Mahal, on the opposite side of Yamuna river, you will find this lush garden with postcard view of Taj Mahal.

While you can also shoot here at sunrise, I loved to see the setting sun in the backdrop of Taj Mahal over the Yamuna river. Another aspect that made this spot perfect for sunsets were the birds that fly back to their nests that are in this garden.

Tripods are not allowed in this garden. Although sunset time is probably the most busy time in this garden, you will always have unobstructed views of the Taj Mahal. If you can plan to visit on Friday, then the complex of Taj Mahal will be empty as its close for regular visits.

Best Travel Tip: The garden is situated around 20-30 minutes from Taj-East-Gate road. The entrance ticket is INR 300 (~USD 4) for foreigners and INR 25 (~USD 0.3) for Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC citizens. The garden is open daily from 6am-6pm (sunrise-sunset).

5. TAJ MAHAL SECRET SUNSET VIEWPOINT

This sunset viewpoint, may no longer be a secret viewpoint as its getting more & more popular on the social media. This gazebo actually belongs to the resident of a local who charges a small fee to get photographed here.

The road to reach this gazebo is not laid out properly and one has to walk over dirt, mud and cow poop filled path to reach here. No vehicles are allowed in this area. Be aware there are no street lights once it gets dark, so don’t forget to carry a torch light. I have also heard that only Indians are allowed to take photos but with little convincing even foreigners can shoot here with a fee.

Unfortunately during my visit, this area was blocked due to some event and we weren’t allowed to go through. I am sharing all the details I had researched to help you find this spot easily. I would definitely not miss this view point on my next visit.

Best Location Tip: The exact GPS coordinates to reach this spot is 27.1770576, 78.0462014. From Taj East Gate Road turn right on the Dashehara ghat road and follow the directions. Lookout for a blue sign board on your right that says “Central Industrial Security Force Unit, Taj Mahal Agra-01” to take right. Follow the small path to reach the point where you will see another sign board “Heritage Walk beyond the Taj -Haveli Khah-i-Dauran & Agha Khah”. Here you will find a gate on the right to enter the gazebo. A local will collect some small fee (INR 50-100/ ~USD 1-2).

6. YAMUNA RIVER BOAT RIDE

The dreamy beautiful view of the Taj Mahal early morning on a boat ride over Yamuna river is such a fairytale moment. Before my visit to Agra, I had booked this sunrise boat ride through Agra By Bike. They were the only official people who were offering this service. But unfortunately, just the day before our ride, this event was cancelled due to government restrictions over an accident. Since then this boat ride has been an illegal activity.

However, like many people, you can try your luck and visit the Yamuna River ghat to look for the only boat man by the name of Manoj. Since it is an illegal activity and subject to police patrolling, your best bet is to arrive early morning around 7am to find him to request for this ride.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this boat ride as its not ethical to support such illegal tourist activity. Instead, I would highly suggest to make your way to this Yamuna ghat early morning to witness the surreal sunrise moment. This vantage point will provide beautiful perspectives for capture.

Best Location Tip: From the Taj-East-Gate-Road simply follow Dashehara Ghat Road all the way down to Yamuna River. Look for Manoj and the locals will guide you to his place for the wooden boat ride. You need to negotiate for the price which can range from INR 150-300 (USD 2-4) depending on the day for 15-30 minutes ride.

7. TAJ MAHAL SUNRISE PHOTO SPOT

If you want a unique perspective of this World Wonder, this area behind Agra Fort provides the best vantage point. To reach this place, put “Haathi Ghat” or “Paradise Park” in Google maps.

This location is not for most tourists but only for serious photography lovers. I have mentioned two spots here because they are around the same area and either one would serve your purpose of seeing the Taj over river Yamuna. This area is mainly bordering the river Yamuna and there is no fixed path.

Once you arrive at the location, make your way to the river bank with care. Depending on the season and rainfall, this area can get really muddy so make sure to wear appropriate footwears.

This river bed looks extremely underwhelming during the day but during sunrise, the Taj Mahal silhouette against the golden hues of the sky looks magical. Although it’s not an easy spot to reach, the unique perspectives of Taj Mahal will make every efforts worthwhile.

Where to Stay – Best Hotels with view of Taj Mahal

Before my visit to Agra, I was certain to stay in a hotel that would provide unobstructed view of the Taj Mahal. Clearly I didn’t want to miss a single moment not admiring this Wonder. So I found out some of the hotels with incredible views of Taj Mahal that will make your stay even more memorable.

The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra – This is the most luxurious and stunning hotel to stay in Agra if you are in the mood to splurge and make your stay unforgettable for honeymoon or special occasion. Because it’s just 600m from the iconic white mausoleum, every room of this hotel offers an incredible view of the Taj.

Crystal Sarovar Premiere, Agra – For our two nights stay, we opted this amazing five star hotel that surpassed all our expectations. With 136 plush rooms with views of the Taj, you can enjoy every moment of your stay without breaking your wallet. Enjoying the views of the Taj from the comforts of the bed was really amazing. The rooftop dining options at Lattice, Sky Grill and Fizz, will also provide the views of the Taj. The friendly staff will always ensure your well being and pamper you with their amazing services.

Taj Hotel & Convention Center Agra  – If you are a fan of Taj Group of Hotels, then this place has the best rooftop infinity pool view of the Taj Mahal. With close proximity to the Taj Mahal, one is just 10 minutes away from the Taj Mahal complex as well as perfect vantage point to take in the many beautiful sights of Agra like Agra Fort.

Radisson Hotel Agra – If you are looking for a budget friendly hotel with views, then Radisson Hotel meets your criteria. While only some of the rooms have sweeping views of the Taj Mahal, one can easily enjoy the same from the rooftop restaurant while dining with the loved ones. This hotel is only a short stroll to public transport and the airport. Hence often a preferred option among the travellers.

CONCLUSION

In summary, here are the important points to keep in mind to have the perfect photos of the Taj Mahal:

  • Make sure to be at the Taj Mahal before sunrise & purchase online tickets to save time.
  • Shoot during the golden hour as the lighting is perfect.
  • Try different perspectives by exploring the symmetry of the Taj Mahal.
  • Do not ignore the human elements as they tell beautiful stories.
  • Look out for different frames, reflections and introduce a sense of scale.
  • Wear colorful outfits or even better Indian attire (e.g. Saree) to introduce contrast against the white marble.
  • Look out in every corner for interesting elements and pay attention to details.
  • Explore the various vantage points outside the Taj Mahal complex.
  • Finally, shoot like this is your only chance to see this Wonder!
