9 INCREDIBLE SINGAPORE PHOTO SPOTS FROM AN INSIDER

1. SUPERTREE GROVE

Supertree Grove is one of the main areas to shoot with the incredible views of the giant supertrees. At 25-50 metre in height, these supertrees provide shade during the day and come alive at night with its exhilarating display of lights and sound. You must visit this place both during the day and night to have the wholesome experience of it’s magic. Every angle and corner of this grove will provide several excellent photo opportunities and let you unleash your photography skills to create magic.

Best time to visit : Supertree Grove is free to visit and is open from 5am until 2am everyday. For best photos without any crowd, come as early as possible to shoot with the sunrise glow. Even during the sunset, the light is incredible, but finding this place empty may be challenging.

Best Photo Tip: In order to capture the supertrees, use the most wide angle lens you have. I love using my 16-35mm lens which captures the entire canopy in frame. Also, some time the best angle is found when the photographer is lying down on the ground to capture the enormity of the supertrees. If you are shooting at night, remember all the lights of the supertrees get turned off at 11 pm to conserve energy.

2. BALCONY VIEW OF SUPERTREES

This place is not marked in the map of Gardens by the Bay. At the main entrance, just next to the information center, you will find a staircase that leads you upstairs. Take the steps to the terrace garden that I fondly call “Balcony”. Alternately, if you are at the Supertree Grove, then right next to the MacDonald, you will see an elevator to go up to this “Balcony”. Once you are upstairs, walk few steps ahead & go to the right end near the edge to see the supertree grove from above. This area has innumerable photo spots and even a few benches that can serve as a perfect photo spot to capture the supertrees from above.

Best time to visit: Shooting here early in the morning is the best as the light is ideal for photography. For night photographers, this place will give you the best vantage point of the entire supertree grove during light show. The light show takes place at 7:45 pm and at 8:45 pm daily and lasts for 10-12 mins.

Best Photo Tip: From this balcony, you can get different perspective of the garden by placing the subject in the supertree grove. You can even use the bougainvillea flowers as your foreground to set a different mood to the shot.

3. CLOUD FOREST

The next incredible spot to photograph is the cool-moist conservatory called Cloud Forest. This conservatory has one of the tallest indoor waterfalls of the world. The tall mountain like indoor architecture is a masterpiece that you must not miss. The entire space is filled with lush greenery and plants of different diversity and origins. I will soon write a detailed post about all the places one can shoot inside this conservatory, so look out for that very soon.

Best time to visit: The Cloud Forest opens at 9am until 9pm. Once you have finished shooting in the Supertree Grove, head your way to this conservatory. This is an excellent place to cool down after all the heat and humidity in the garden. Ideally visit on a weekday when the place is relatively less busy. There is an entrance fee, check here to avail the attraction bundle to save money.

Best Photo Tip: The indoor waterfall is right at the beginning as you enter the dome. Use a wide angle lens to capture the full waterfall in your frame. Every 2 hours mist is released in the forest starting at 10am that creates an ethereal atmosphere.

4. FLOWER DOME

This is the largest glass greenhouse in the world as listed in the 2015 Guinness World Records! Hence, if you are a lover of flowers and plants, then this place is a paradise for you. Every season the flowers keep changing and the display will leave you speechless. From the Spring Sakura blooms to Tulip gardens, this garden boasts an array of colorful delights that are ideal for photography. So, visit this conservatory with ample time in hand as you will easily get lost in the several gardens in this place.

Best Travel Tip: This place needs an entrance fee. Buy the tickets online to avoid the line at ticket counter and get package tickets to save money. For more details check here.

5. FLORAL FANTASY

Floral Fantasy is a relatively new thematic attraction at Gardens by the Bay. Here, the flowers, artistry and technology come together to create a dreamlike, fantastical experience. This is comparatively a small garden where the flowers are hung from ceilings and dance with the music to create a beautiful atmosphere. At the end of this garden, you will enjoy a 4D ride show that is included in the price of the ticket.

Best time to visit: Since this space is relatively small compared to other conservatories, I would suggest to visit on a week day to avoid the crowds. However, I have visited on a Sunday morning right at the opening time at 9am and with little bit of patience got perfect shots without any photobombers. There is an entrance fee and the details can be found here.

Best Photo Tip: The most instagrammable spot of this place is right at the entrance where you can see the flowers hanging from the ceilings. While you can get few angles to shoot, keeping the camera closer to ground level gives a great perspective of the flower ceiling.

6. WATERFRONT PROMENADE

The walk on the waterfront promenade will provide many beautiful vantage points for photoshoot. I love how the architectural buildings are right next to the Marina Bay. This place gets really very beautiful, especially during evenings & at sunset. You can even have the view of Singapore Flyer in your backdrop which simply makes this spot Instagram worthy.

Best time to visit: Although you can visit here anytime of the day, I feel golden hour of the evening or early morning will be ideal. My favorite time to shoot here is around sunset time. This spot is free and never crowded for a photo shoot.

Best Photo Tip: You can find the exact spot of the photograph at the GPS coordinates 1.284310, 103.866829. I will recommend to use a portrait lens so that you can capture the background of ferris wheel better.

7. WATER LILY POND

Although this water lily pond is relatively small, it has beautiful views and reflections of the Marina Bay Sands. It might be a little tricky to find this place but just follow the map or the GPS coordinates mentioned below to arrive to this spot. Only few photographers or IG people visit this place and hence never gets very crowded. This spot is relatively a hidden gem to the majority of the tourists visiting the garden.

Best time to visit: Again, this is a spot that can be visited anytime. Since there is ample of shade from the surrounding trees, you can even shoot at midday. Personally, I love to shoot here closer to sunset. At twilight, when the lights glow at Marina Bay Sands and Super Trees, this place looks magical with the reflections on the pond.

Best Photo Tip: The exact GPS coordinates to arrive to this spot is 1.282542, 103.866794. Some excellent night photography is possible post sunset. For best results, use a tripod for night photography.

8. DRAGONFLY LAKE

The Dragonfly Bridge that connects the Bayfront MRT station (Take Exit B and follow the underground linkway) with the Gardens by the Bay has an incredible view overlooking the supertrees, Singapore Flyer and the Dragonfly Lake. Surrounding the lake, you will find boardwalk that forms an excellent path for walking along the lake. You can find several vantage point to take amazing photos with different background in frame. I still consider this place as a hidden gem.

Best time to visit: This bridge is free for admission and can be visited 5am – 2am. I would highly recommend visiting either early morning or evening closer to sunset times.

Best Photo Tip: While you can take photos from different perspectives here, I really loved shooting from the Dragonfly bridge to capture the beautiful scenery around. You can capture the Singapore Flyer, supertrees, lush greenery and the fountains of the dragonfly lake – all in one frame. Just remember, if you come too early in the morning, then the fountains won’t be working.

9. BAY EAST GARDEN

Bay East Garden is a huge garden that offers a tranquil respite from the bustling city life with an incredible view of the Singapore skyline. This place is free to visit and open 24 hours. This garden is exceptionally amazing place to watch the fireworks during Singapore National Day or New Year. During those special days, one can plan picnics here and enjoy the mind-blowing fireworks against the picture perfect skyline.

Best time to visit: While this part of the garden can be visited any time, I would highly recommend evening for the soft light before sunset. If you love night photography, the skyline gets alive and dreamy with the setting sun.

BONUS: CHRISTMAS WONDERLAND

The list of incredible places to shoot in Gardens by the Bay won’t be complete without mentioning Christmas Wonderland. Generally, Gardens by the Bay decks up its grounds for almost every big calendar event like Mid-autumn festival, Chinese New year and so on. But the biggest event is Christmas Wonderland. If you are planning to visit Singapore around Christmas, then you are in for a special treat as every year the garden gets decorated magically. Modeled after the European Christmas markets, all the dazzling lights, bells, decorations, shops and even some “snowfall” creates such a fairytale Christmassy vibe that you won’t believe you are in a tropical island.

Best Photo Tip: Since Christmas Wonderland happens for few weeks only, it is incredibly famous and busy. You can capture the vibe of the Christmas mood any time of the day. However, to get crowd free shots, late evening will be your best bet. The best time to shoot is from 10pm until the main lights are turned of at 11pm.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING GARDENS BY THE BAY

  1. Since Gardens by the Bay offer a lot to do and see, it’s best to devote a full day to explore all its attractions without any rush. If you have limited time, make supertree grove and cloud forest your priority.
  2. Being in the center of Singapore, it is very well connected with all modes of transport like bus, taxi, and MRT. To get the exact directions and information about the route, click here.
  3. To save on money and time, I would recommend to purchase the online tickets for the conservatories. If you plan to visit more than one conservatory, then the combo ticket will be the cheapest option.
  4. Don’t forget to carry a light jacket as it often gets very cold inside the conservatories. Wear good shoes as one would need to walk a lot to check all the beautiful spots. Wear sunscreen as it can get very sunny in the afternoons.
  5. Although there are many water fountains, it is always best to carry water along as Singapore’s humidity can drain you off easily.
  6. There are many cafes and restaurants so you will never be far away from delicious food.
  7. If you are interested, you can also download the free Gardens by the Bay mobile app to enhance your travel experience with the free audio guide. This app will help you navigate easily along with providing information about plants and flowers as you encounter.
  8. Finally, bring lots of energy and enthusiasm as Gardens by the Bay will definitely make you speechless with all its amazing sights and beauty.

HAPPY TRAVELS!
